St. Margaret of Scotland School celebrated Youth Art Month in March with an all-school project led by volunteers of the Art@SMOS program. Pre-K through 8th grade students learned about site specific environmental art ahead of turning to their school’s exterior walls and fences. Using trash collected from home and lots of paint, students created flowers from water bottles, yogurt containers, plastic bags and milk jugs. Over spring break the parent team of artists curated the trash blossom creations, attaching them to large-scale “trellises” made of construction fencing. We hope the vibrant results brighten the tail end of winter – they were intended as a gift for our neighbors as well as our school! But catch it now: the installation is temporary.
Art@SMOS is a volunteer/faculty collaboration begun by parents in 2012 to support curriculum-based art for K-8th grade students at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Volunteers teach in classrooms, display student work, lead school-wide projects and raise funds for the art program. Art@SMOS is funded mostly through in-kind and monetary donations, fundraising, and grants, including a 2013 Shaw Helping Hands grant from the Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association.
