New Church at Shaw and Tower GroveBy: Jenny Gerstner
There has been some dirt kicked up on the corner of Shaw Boulevard and Tower Grove recently. Work is being done to restore, refurbish and beautify the church on the 4200 block in preparation for opening, The Word At Shaw later this year. Pastor Keith Scarborough reflected on the process stating, “The church building has great bones. We don’t intend to disturb any of the architecture. We plan to provide needed TLC in restoring the property to a look and feel in keeping with the beauty of the neighborhood.”
As restoration continues, members of The Word At Shaw are getting their hands dirty elsewhere in the neighborhood by simultaneously partnering with Shaw area organizations to serve the community. The Word is scheduled to help plant a sensory garden at the Missouri School for the Blind on Magnolia, and provide extra hands in ongoing service projects at both Shalom House and Kingdom House. Shalom House on Taylor Avenue, provides emergency shelter and transitional housing for women in need. Kingdom House, located on Eleventh Street serves families through their child daycare, youth and family support programs. Members of The Word plan future projects with Isaiah 58 ministries, for which canned goods were collected on National Night Out. Desiring to serve as fully as possible, volunteers delivered and shelved the food items collected in partnership with several Shaw neighborhood blocks from the August third event. Pastor Scarborough shared that he is, “Looking forward to working with the community in the community.” He added that, “Each service project is an opportunity to get to know our neighbors by working alongside one another to improve life for all those living and working here.” He also shared that ‘Pastor Scarborough’ is far too formal, asking to be called ‘Pastor Keith’ or just ‘Keith’.
